GTSG Gungnir Final Version, by Robin Varley 5th Jan 2001

INSTALLATION

Copy Gungnir.pof to your freespace2/data/models dir.

Then you need to cut and paste the data.txt into the ships.tbl file in your freespace2/data/tables directory

If you don't have these tables, download the *.vp viewer from those great people at:

http://www.descent-freespace.com/

you will then be able to extract them to the tables directory

You then need to copy the Genericshield.ani to the freespace2/data/hud dir.
Then you have to "log" this with the game, to do this you need to open the hud.tbl file in the tables dir, and add this:

$Shield:	genericshield

simply put it on it's own line before the #END

***NOTE ON SHIELDS***

However there is one thing to bear in mind, as it says at the top of the hud.tbl file, you can only have 40 entries. The shield ani I've include is a generic one, so if you've filled all you're entries up (which only happens when you download other stuff) feel free to use this to represent other shields too.

The game knows which shield ani to use for which ship, by an entry in the data for that ship in the ships.tbl, it looks like (in the case of my mod) this:

$Shield_icon: genericshield

if you want to use the generic shield ani, copy over the existing line with this one.

(I know someone has done shielded versions of the Volition sentry guns, this would probably be useful for)

***END NOTE***

The sentry gun should then appear in FRED2 as the GSG Gungnir.

Please note that the Ships.tbl (indeed all of the *.tbl files) are limited to being 380kb in size, the easiest way to deal with this is to delete the descriptions for the ships, this gives you loads of extra room.

The bit to delete looks like this:

+Tech Description:
XSTR(
"blah blah blah.", 3162)

simply remove what ever blah blah blah is, but don't delete the quotation marks.

To take up less space in the ships.tbl, I've left the description blank, if you want it, copy the one from below.

DESCRIPTION

In Norse mythology Gungnir is a magical spear carried by Odin, the ruler of the Norse gods. It was crafted by Sif, who also forged Thor's hammer, Mjolnir.

The Gungnir is an advanced sentry gun, designed specifically to defend the Mjolnir RBC from attack by enemy fighters and bombers. It is well equipped to carry out its task, armed with two Prometheus S cannon, and a forward and rear facing missile pod. The Gungnir is also one of the first sentry gun systems to be routinely equipped with shields. A group of Gungnir and Mjolnir sentry guns are more than capable of defending jump nodes from light enemy attack

GAMEPLAY

Compared with Alastor, it's vastly superior, it shields allow it take a beating, and it's got good ranged firepower, 1.5km for the guns, 1.9km for the missiles. Eight of these took out 16 assorted Shivan ships, suffering almost zero damage, the same number of Alastor's failed to destroy any enemies at all.

It's main weakness is against Cap ships, because it is stationary, AAA beams don't have much trouble hitting it, and beam weapons igonre shields. However a group of these and some sensibly placed Mjolnir's can take on cruisers, corvettes and their escorts.

This gun has 3 LOD's, debris, paths and working second level of detail turrets, you can even see the turrets moving around in your target camera view, the works basically.

PROBLEMS

As it's the final version, technically there shouldn't be any.

COMING SOON

Time permitting, I will be doing a web site to stick my creations on to.

I've got a completed light installation, and very soon a new Cruiser and Freighter. I also have an SD Lucifer with a "working" shield mesh, however it does have some bugs, namely that if you shoot it in certain places too many times the game crashes. Ask me if you want it.

THANKS

Volition, of course
Volition Watch, for recommending the first version of the GTI Acheron
Scott Perry, for FSMM2
Garry Knudson, Richard Garand and Frank Krueger for WinCOB2F2, COB2FS2 and POF2FS2

And a special mention for the makers of Warzone and Derelict, I just finished playing them over the holiday and it was like getting Freespace 2 for the first time all over again, they're great campaigns and if you haven't downloaded them, do it now.

Blackwater Ops. is going to be very cool...

Feel free to use this as you wish, just please give me credit for making it.

If any thing breaks, remember - I didn't do it.

Though I'd advise backing up your tables directory before changing things
